The Merchants of Bollywood Review

Like most Asians, I grew up watching and loving Bollywood movies, so I was thrilled to be invited to the open night of theatrical dance extravaganza The Merchants of Bollywood.

After 1000 performances, including a sell out international tour and 2 packed summer seasons at The Peacock Theatre, I had extremely high expectations. After all, 2 million people worldwide have seen this performance, what’s the secret to the shows success?

The Merchants of Bollywood instantly had all the right ingredients which make Bollywood so successful, the strict elder vs. the ambitious daughter and the expected drama vs. the comical joker character. The show was full of colour and energy, the acting was of a high standard, much like in the movies and the performance contained the right mix of classical kathak and modern disco music, which creates instant appeal for both the eastern and western audiences.

My theatre date accompanying me on the night were my two sisters and it was great to hear all the classic Bollywood hits that our parents love, it reminded us of our childhood! With Bollywood’s top young choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant behind the high energy dance routines, it was hard to remain on my seat. There was audience interaction, the show oozed sassiness and glamour, was a real crowd pleaser and left us all wanting more!!! It was so good that I might even go and watch it again! Next time I’ll take my parents as I know they’ll love it too.
